Whereabouts
A fine system of channels runs right through the mineral of the skeleton. Cells sit in small cavities inside it, having let themselves be walled in while the mineral was laid down; their long extensions reach one another through these channels. The fluid in this net touches the bound phosphate directly, and every exchange between skeleton and blood begins here.
Signal
Those very walled-in cells make a peptide hormone that the scientific literature lists under the short name FGF23. It leaves bone tissue by way of the bloodstream and arrives at the kidney. That a tissue commonly taken for scaffolding gives off hormones of its own was described only around the turn of the millennium.
Way back
Most of the phosphate the kidney filters out of the blood is gathered in again shortly afterwards. Two related transport proteins sit in the wall of the first tubule segment for that purpose. How many of them are built in there at any given moment hangs, among other things, on the messenger from the card next door.
Bone tissue is taken down in small districts and filled with mineral again at the same spot. Whatever comes free lands in the blood first. Whether it finds its way back into the skeleton from there or leaves the body with the urine is decided not in the bone but a little further along: in the tubules of the kidney.
An existing state does not hold by itself when material keeps being drawn out of it. The authorized phrasing therefore points at the holding of that state, provided nothing else is lacking — and not at any change in it:

The European Food Safety Authority assessed this sentence on its scientific merits, after which the European Commission entered it on the list of permitted phrasings. It is filed there word for word and may be neither widened nor paraphrased.
The wording names no quantity, no period of time and no subgroup within the adult population. It says nothing about mood, sleep or concentration and makes no statement about a state that departs from the ordinary one. The proteins that appear on this page are not in it either; they merely show why research took an interest in this element and the skeleton.
